WHO WE ARE



The American Legion, the nation's largest congressionally charter veterans organization, dates to 1919 when those being discharged following WORLD WAR I held organizational meeting in Paris, France, March 15, 1919 and later in St. Louis, Missouri, May 8, 1919

Today the organization has 55 departments. One in each state, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and Philippines with a membership of 2.8 million and 15000 posts.

The American Legion Department of Pennsylvania is the largest of all departments with a membership of 230,431, 827 posts and 30 districts.

The department is divided into three section of the commonwealth.

The Eastern Section is composed of eight districts, which includes counties of BERKS, BUCKS, CARBON, DELAWARE, LANCASTER, LEHIGH, MONROE, MONTGOMERY, NORTHAMPTON, PHILADELPHIA and SCHUYLKILL. Located in these counties are 260 posts and a membership of 61,626 that is 26.74% of department total membership.

The Central Section is composed of eight districts, which includes counties of ADAMS, BRADFORD, CLINTON, COLUMBIA, CUMBERLAND, DAUPHIN, FRANKLIN, FULTON, HUNTINGTON, JUNIATA, LACKAWANNA, LEBAON, LUZERNE, LYCOMING, MIFFLIN, MONTOUR, NORTHUMBERLAND, PERRY, PIKE, POTTER, SNYDER, SULLIVAN, SUSQUEHANNA, TIOGA, UNION, WAYNE, WYOMING and YORK. Located in these counties are 219 posts and a membership of 75,508 that is 32.77% of department total membership.

The Western Section is composed of fourteen districts, which include counties of ALLEGHENY, ARMSTRONG, BEAVER, BEDFORD, BLAIR, BUTLER, CAMBRIA, CAMERON, CENTRE, CLARION, CLEARFIELD, ELK, ERIE, FAYETTE, FOREST, GREENE, INDIANA, JEFFERSON, LAWRENCE, McKEAN, MERCER, SOMERSET, VENANGO, WARREN, WASHINGTON and WESTMORELAND. Located in these counties are 348 posts and a membership of 93,297 that is 40.49% of department total membership.

Pennsylvania Headquarters is located at 800 North Front Street, Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania 17043 with a regular full time staff of 29 employees. We have five Department Service Offices that are located in Pennsylvania at the community of Erie, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Wilkes Barre to help veterans with their questions and claims.
